SOTO CANO AIR BASE, Honduras -- Joint Task Force-Bravo honored Command Sgt. Maj. Valmond A. Martin during a retirement ceremony conducted here, Jan. 29, 2014.
Martin was born and raised in Montserrat, an island known as the "Emerald Isle of the Caribbean," before migrating to the United States in 1980. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a forward observer on Oct. 26, 1983. He attended basic training and advanced individual training at Fort Sill, Okla., and later reclassified as an armor crewman.
In more than 31 years of service to the United States, Martin served in a number of leadership capacities as well as deployments, to include Operation IRAQI FREEDOM II, V, and 09-10. As Joint Task Force-Bravo Command Sergeant Major, Martin served as the senior enlisted advisor to the Joint Task Force-Bravo commander as well as a counselor and mentor to all enlisted members of the task force.
