MACDILL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Downtown Tampa, in a room overlooking the bay, with a glimpse of Davis Island Bridge on the horizon, a ground-breaking event was in progress.

Military members, families and friends, and Tampa General Hospital staff gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony signifying the new partnership between Tampa General Hospital and the 6th Medical Group from MacDill Air Force Base, Aug. 3, 2011.

The Air Force Nurse Transition Program prepares servicemembers to transition from "a novice to a competentent military nurse," said Col. Robert Rocco, 6th Medical group commander.

The ceremony established Tampa General as the third satellite location for the AF Nurse Transition Program.

"At Tampa General participants obtain a wealth of experience which is unmatched by anywhere else in the United States," said Col. Dennis Oakes, 6th Medical Group chief nurse.

Ronald Hytoff, TGH president and honorary commander of the 6th Medical Group, noted that the Tampa General staff differs from others he's encountered due to their care for students and passion for their profession.

The first class at Tampa General will graduate from the nine-week course in early September. Among the inaugural class is:
2nd Lt. Joshua Baker, headed to Keesler AFB, Texas
2nd Lt. Rebecca Breedlove, headed to Eglin AFB, Fla.

2nd Lt. Kaitlyn Radius, headed to Lackland AFB, Texas
