    1st Theater Sustainment Command

FORT BRAGG, N.C. -- Seventy-two hours after taking command and just hours before he boarded a plane to Afghanistan, Maj. Gen. Darrell K. Williams, 1st Theater Sustainment Command’s commanding general, hosted his first town hall meeting Feb. 3 at Pope Theater here.

"This is a great organization and it was great before I got here. I hope it’s going to continue to be great while I am here and long after I am gone. The reason it is great is because of all of you," Williams said to First Team soldiers and Department of the Army civilian employees at the start of the meeting. I am just here to do my part, and my part happens to be, the commander of a great organization."

During the meeting Williams, a native of West Palm Beach, Fla., told the audience a little about his Family, his education and background and his love for Miami football. He also shared his initial thoughts, priorities and way ahead for the command.

"I believe that if you take care of troops, and their Families, and obviously our civilians, contractors and other teammates - that the mission happens. I don’t think that the reverse is true," said Williams.

Other main points discussed during the meeting were leader development, discipline and standards, organizational priorities, accountability and Soldier and Family resiliency. Williams reiterated that the 1st TSC’s mission of sustainment and support of retrograde operations and the transition to resolute support in Afghanistan will continue. He asked for the teams help over the next 60 days as he assesses the command and its mission posture.

Following his remarks, Williams reached out to the audience for questions. One 1st TSC Soldier wanted to know Williams’ thoughts about the command’s future and the impending downsizing of the Army.

"I do honestly believe that we will be able to accomplish the mission," he said.

At the end of the question and answer session, Command Sgt. Maj. Charles Tobin, 1st TSC command sergeant major, joined Williams at the front of the theater and welcomed him to the First Team.

"General Williams, I am humbled, excited and honored to have your leadership. This is one of the great things about what we do in the Army. When one great leader steps down, another one steps up," said Tobin.

The 1st TSC command team closed the meeting by thanking the audience for all that they do and said they look forward to working together to support the warfighter.
