EL PASO, Texas – MAES: Latinos for Science and Engineering leaders, Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students, and Marines from Marine Corps Recruiting Command are partnering for the 2014 MAES Leadership Academy at the University of Texas at El Paso, Tuesday through Saturday in El Paso, Texas.

Marines working as leadership trainers are conducting multiple engagements and instructing events that range from seminars, physical training challenges and interpersonal mentorship opportunities.

MAES was founded in 1974 with a mission to promote, cultivate and honor excellence in education and leadership among future Latino American engineers and scientists.

The Marine Corps recognizes this partnership with MAES and other like professional development organizations as a valuable opportunity to create positive and mutually beneficial relationships with its members to share the Marine Corps story. This builds leadership with American youth and reinforces the idea of the Marine Corps as a viable career option within the Latin American and other diverse communities.

“We help them build their leadership skills and build a stronger community to ensure the Corps remains connected with the American public,” said Capt. Mabel Annunziata, adjutant with The Basic School. “In return they give us the ideal candidates to come into the Marine Corps and help us build a stronger bond with the Latin American community.”

Marines excel in coveted, highly marketable traits in the corporate world such as leadership, discipline and teamwork. Engagement opportunities like the MAES Leadership Academy link Marines with talented young leaders to help students grow and push them above their peers as they begin their occupational pursuits.

“It does not matter if the students major in STEM or pursuing liberal art degrees. The Marine Corps provides both tangible and intangible traits like strong moral character, physical fitness, leadership and discipline that will help them professionally grow no matter where they work,” said 2nd Lt. Jose Valle, Marine Corps Recruiting Command MAES leadership academy trainer.

During the outdoor physical challenge activity, MAES students had to learn how to properly use a lensatic compass and navigate through the rough terrain of West Texas. They had to work together to find and transport water jugs and ammo cans, and create a medical litter to carry a simulated casualty to an assembly area.

To complete the course and overcome the obstacles successfully, the students worked with each other’s strengths and weaknesses and learned when to take charge and when to listen.

“It was an amazing experience, I never had anything like this, it’s something new,” said Hugo Valverde, a MAES member and academy participate. “Something I did learn is that everybody has something to bring to the table.”

Another benefit to engagements like MAES leadership academies for Marine Corps Recruiting Command is the opportunity to connect with community leaders, influencers and highly qualified individuals that may develop future leads for applicants or even become future Marine leaders.

“As our Commandant of the Marine Corps has stated, we are committed to recruit and retain diverse publics in the Corps so we ultimately reflect the diverse American public that we serve,” said Capt. Ryan Strehl, officer selection officer with Recruiting Station Albuquerque. “These are high quality diverse individuals that the Marine Corps would like see become potential candidates.”

The MAES partnership is one way the Marine Corps is committed to generating and sustaining a diverse future force that will bring into the Corps cultural expertise, language, unique skill sets and a variety of philosophies to meet the future operational requirements of the Marine Corps.
