CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Colonel Timothy R. Powledge received command of 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, from Lt. Col. Charles R. Cassidy during a change of command ceremony at the William Pendleton Thompson Hill Field, Feb. 6.
Cassidy has been with 3rd Bn., 2nd Marines since December 2002, and said that his toughest challenge as the commanding officer was the day he stopped being the “C-O.”
He then showed his gratitude toward his Marines for doing their best during his tenure as the unit’s commander, and showed confidence in his replacement by saying that Powers would keep moving forward with the battalion.
“I’m humbled to walk amongst your ranks. Move out from here and show Col. Powers the metal you are made of;, demonstrate the warrior’s ethos that pulses through your veins and motivates your actions as you uphold that legacy of this remarkable battalion. Gentlemen, you will remain my heroes, Semper Fi,” said Cassidy before handing over the microphone to the new battalion commander.
Powledge acknowledged the distinguished guests in attendance, as well as friends and family who traveled from near and far to watch him take command of the battalion.
“You have set the bar high, but we will try our best to meet the standard you have set,” said Powers while addressing the Marines as the new commanding officer.
Powledge said that he plans to move forward with the battalion the way it is, and improve where there is room for improvement.
“Turning over with a good commander and having a great sergeant major are some of the things that have set me up for success,” said Powledge. “It’s going to give me the tools I need to guide this unit in the right direction.”
