Afghan national security forces and coalition forces were conducting a combat patrol when they encountered and defeated Taliban forces guarding a heroin lab.

The heroin lab, located approximately 23 kilometers (13.8 miles) south of Musa Qalah, contained large amounts of opium processing chemicals such as ammonium chloride, liquid ammonia, and charcoal. In addition, two rifles, two shotguns, ammunition, insurgent propaganda and improvised explosive device materials were recovered.

After destroying the lab, the ANSF and coalition forces team continued with their combat patrol and were met by a third attempted ambush in less than 24 hours. This engagement took place 11 kilometers (6.6 miles) north of the heroin lab.

Taliban militants fired mortars at their own countrymen in an effort to protect their drug trade.
