IWAKUNI, Japan - The laughter of Girl Scouts from USA Girl Scouts Overseas could be heard throughout Crossroads Mall aboard Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, Feb. 23, 2014, as they celebrated World Thinking Day 2014.
The purpose of World Thinking Day is to teach Girl Scouts they are a part of a larger community with more than 10 million Girl Scouts worldwide, according to Hyla Melloy, USAGSO co-chairman for Iwakuni.
“Every year, Girl Scouts are given a theme to elaborate on, and this year’s theme is, ‘education opens doors for boys and girls around the world,’” said Melloy. “Every troop is assigned a country which they research. They then bring back what they found and present and educate other Girl Scouts on the information they learned about their sister scouts around the world.”
The event began with Girl Scouts reciting the Girl Scout promise and law, which reminds them why they wanted to become Girl Scouts and swore the oath. The girls then proceeded to discusses World Thinking Day.
The Girl Scout troops aboard station consist of Daisy Troop 93; Kindergarten – 1st grade, Brownie Troop 92; 2nd – 3rd grade, Junior Troop 94; 4th – 5th grade, and Cadette Troop 30; 6th – 8th grade. Each troop gave their presentation on their assigned country and afterward, the girls took a chance to learn about each country in detail.
“World Thinking Day broadens the troops education and helps to instill in the Girl Scouts to research on their own and learn they have a wealth of knowledge at their finger tips,” said Amanda Oehrlien, co-leader of the Cadettes. “It’s fun to get out and see them explore, not only here in Japan by hiking and doing other events, but also to watch them grow as leaders and present their researched country and educate their fellow sisters.”
On this day, the closing ceremony was slightly different. Instead of grouping in a full circle and reciting their pledges, the Girl Scouts of Iwakuni gathered in a half-circle, with the other half representing their sister scouts around the world.
“Being overseas in Iwakuni is a great opportunity for the girls not only to learn about girl scouting, but to build relationships with the Girl Scouts in Japan,” said Melloy.
Melloy also said the Girl Scouts of Iwakuni are collaborating with the Japanese Girl Scouts and plan to celebrate the Girl Scout’s Birthday jointly.
