NEW ELLENTON, S.C. - The South Carolina National Guard (SCNG) and the U.S. Department of Energy Savannah River Operations Office (DOE-SR) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) outlining the use of land by the SCNG and the construction of new facilities at the Savannah River Site, Feb. 27.

The MOU was signed at the Applied Research Center in New Ellenton by Maj. Gen. Robert E. Livingston Jr., the adjutant general of South Carolina, and Dr. David C. Moody, manager of the DOE-SR.

“I’m really excited about this partnership,” said Moody. “We look forward to being able to move ahead with some joint endeavors in emergency response so that we are supporting one another.”

The MOU states that the facilities will serve the SCNG, other military organizations, other federal agencies, and the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL). Development of the joint use facilities on the Savannah River Site is one of the primary goals of the MOU, as well as to further establish a close working relationship between the South Carolina National Guard, the U.S. Department of Energy Savannah River Operations Office, and the Savannah River National Laboratory.

“The threats to our nation have evolved, and it’s great to see these two organizations come together to look at those threats,” said Livingston. “This relationship has the capability to become a regional asset if not truly a national treasure.”
