POINT LOMA, Calif. – Sailors assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) 3 participated in a community outreach event at Point Loma High School, March 5.

Students were introduced to Navy EOD, including job duties, training and qualifications, and how a career in EOD relates to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

“The goal of this visit was to demonstrate that Navy EOD is a STEM specific career field,” said Lt. j.g. Morgan Dahl. “The students were very receptive and intrigued by the presentation.”

Sailors provided a hands-on experience for the students with EOD equipment, including the Mark II Talon and PacBot robots, dive gear, and X-ray equipment. They were also able to step inside a mine-resistant ambush protected vehicle (MRAP) and try on a bomb suit.

“I think it’s great showing these kids a different side of the Navy than they might be used to,” said Explosive Ordnance Disposal 2nd Class Craig Bull.

During the event, Sailors answered questions from the students about their training, experiences on deployment and requirements to become an EOD technician. Explosive Ordnance Disposal 2nd Class James Knox shared his experience of joining the Navy after gaining a college degree in Computer Science and Physics.

“I was able to use what I learned in high-school and college and take that into the real world instead of just working in a lab,” said Knox.

“As a community, we love showing our capabilities to civilians and JROTC students,” said Dahl. “Most of the students had heard of EOD, but did not understand what the job was. After the presentation they had a better understanding of EOD and our mission.”

EODMU 3 provides operational explosive ordnance disposal capability as required for the location, identification, rendering safe, recovery, field evaluation and disposal of all explosive ordnance, including chemical and nuclear weapons.

U.S. Navy EOD is the world’s premier combat force for countering explosive hazards and conducting expeditionary diving and salvage.
