OCEANSIDE, Calif. – The 311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command and the 364th ESC conducted a joint Best Warrior competition at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton March 7-9.

Best Warrior is an annual competition overseen by the Department of the Army as a means of identifying and recognizing soldiers in active, special operations, National Guard and Reserve components of the U.S. Army.

During the three-day competition, participants are tested on their Army aptitude, conquering urban warfare simulations, board interviews, physical fitness tests, written exams and warrior tasks and battle drills relevant to today’s operating environment.

“As senior leaders, this is an opportunity for us to train and mentor junior enlisted and young noncommissioned officers,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Ted Copeland, 311th ESC command sergeant major. “With the high quality of soldiers we have, I think we have a good chance to advance to the next levels of competition.”

Many of the soldiers who competed in this event had already competed in battalion and brigade level competitions. The winner of this event will go on to compete at the 79th Sustainment Support Command level, then on to the U.S. Army Reserve Command level, and final to the Department of the Army level.

The noncommissioned officer winner was Staff Sgt. David Gonzalez, 137th Quartermaster Company, El Monte, Calif., and the junior enlisted winner was Spc. Erin Bridges, 711th Transportation Company, Vallejo, Calif.

Not only did Bridges win the junior enlisted title she was named “Best Warrior” during the entire event.

“It was fun and a great experience, but I still have work to do. I feel honored to have won,” said Bridges. “It is an amazing feeling, but I couldn’t have done it without my sponsor Staff Sgt. Zeb Dougherty.”

Among the events, the competitors endured the Army physical fitness test, consisting of pushups, situps and a two-mile run, maneuvered through a land navigation course, fired M4 rifles at the range and hiked a six-mile road march.

The competition was completed during a banquet, where certificates, medals, plaques and awards were handed out.
