SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. – This week’s U.S. Army Central soldier spotlight is Master Sgt. Patrick N. Goodwin, a USARCENT logistics exercise noncommissioned officer.
Goodwin joined U.S. Army Central from First Army Division West, 120th Infantry Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas in 2012. Goodwin, a Columbia, S.C., native, joined the Army in 1986, two years after graduating from A.C. Flora High School.
Goodwin advises soldiers to take being a leader very seriously.
“Always take care of your soldiers. Your leadership is a reflection of you. Even once you’ve journeyed on and no longer wear this uniform, the dedication you show to your soldiers and your attitude passes on,” said Goodwin.
Q: What are your hobbies?
A: I enjoy bowling, fishing, racquetball, football and chess.
Q. What do you enjoy doing most during your free time?
A: During my free time, I like to relax, watch movies and listen to music.
Q. What are your short/long-term professional goals?
A: My short-term goal is to complete my military service in the next year. My long-term goal is to complete my bachelor’s degree in supply management at Ashford University.
Q. When did you make the decision to become a soldier and why?
A: I decided to join the military when I discovered the job I was working almost 28 years ago wasn’t challenging enough.
Q. If you could take a vacation to a location of your choice, where would you go?
A: I would go to Cherokee Mountain Cabins in North Carolina. It's nice and it’s secluded there. Along the creek are log cabins. I picture myself listening to running water and the sounds of nature.
Q. What do you enjoy most about being a soldier?
A: I enjoy that I served my country with pride for the last 28 years. I believe I made a difference in many soldiers lives.
Q. If you could change one thing about the Army, what would you change and why?
A: I would change the perception that devoted leadership is a thing of the past. I am constantly amazed at how far off course we’ve gone, forgetting that our soldiers of today are our forces of protection for tomorrow. So, as senior leaders, we need to ensure we are giving junior soldiers everything they need so they’ll stand as a strong and united force.
Q. If you could hold a different position in ARCENT for one day, what position would you choose?
A: I wouldn’t choose any other position because if we’re not making a difference in the position that we hold, then it defeats the purpose to say we’re leaders.
