By Capt. Brian Hare, S.C. National Guard Public Affairs and 1st Lt. Amanda Adams, 263rd AAMDC.
ANDERSON, S.C. – The South Carolina National Guard’s 263rd Army Air and Missile Defense Command (AAMDC) held a Change of Command ceremony for outgoing commander Maj. Gen. Gregory W. Batts to incoming commander Brig. Gen. Glenn A. Bramhall at Daniel Hall in the Rainey Fine Arts Center of Anderson University, March 9.
As the incoming commanding general for the 263rd AAMDC, Bramhall also assumed responsibility as the Deputy Area Air Defense Commander for the Continental North American Aerospace Defense Command (CONR). Since September of 2001, CONR has been the lead agency for Operation Noble Eagle, an ongoing mission to protect the continental United States from terrorist attacks from both inside and outside of U.S. borders.
Headquartered in Anderson, the 263rd AAMDC serves as a supporting command to U.S. Army North to detect, deter, divert, and if necessary defeat air and cruise missile threats to the continental United States. As part of their federal mission, the 263rd deploys a command and control element to the National Capital Region (NCR) every three years as a component of the NCR’s Integrated Air Defense mission. The 263rd also trains and validates every Army Air Defense unit that deploys to the NCR and supports combined joint force exercises and mission rehearsal exercises with active duty AAMDC counterparts.
“The 263rd are silent sentinels protecting the homeland,” said Maj. Gen. Robert E. Livingston, Jr., the adjutant general for S.C. “These soldiers are prepared to protect against any airborne threat that crosses our borders.”
“It is both gratifying and fun to be a part of something that’s world class,” said Batts in his remarks. “This unit truly is a world class unit.”
“I’ve had the privilege of following General Batts under two commands,” said Bramhall. Previously, Bramhall served at the 1-118th Infantry Battalion as a commander and at the 263rd AAMDC as the deputy commanding general under Batts.
Bramhall stressed the importance of family, recognizing many members of his family that were in attendance at the ceremony. “We are nothing without families,” he said.
Bramhall also recognized what he called his “deployment family” and his “military family,” which included members of the audience with whom he had served in previous assignments. “We truly are a part of one team,” he said.
Following the change of command, Bramhall was promoted to the rank of major general in a ceremony that included his wife, Faith Bramhall.
