OCEANSIDE, Calif. – The 364th Expeditionary Sustainment Command and the 311th ESC conducted a joint Best Warrior competition at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton March 7-9.

Best Warrior is an annual competition overseen by the Department of the Army as a means of identifying and recognizing Soldiers in active, special operations, National Guard and Reserve components of the United States Army.

During the three-day competition, participants are tested on their Army aptitude, conquering urban warfare simulations, board interviews, physical fitness tests, written exams and Warrior tasks and battle drills relevant to today’s operating environment.

“This was a well run competition and a good opportunity to train and mentor junior enlisted and young noncommissioned officers,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas Brashears, 364th ESC command sergeant major. “Events like this raises soldiers' standards and expectations, and the back to basics format of this competition tests the metal of the competitors.”

Many of the soldiers who competed in this event had already competed in battalion and brigade level competitions. The winners of this event will go on to compete at the 79th Sustainment Support Command level, then on to the U.S. Army Reserve Command level, and final to the Department of the Army level.

The noncommissioned officer winner was Sgt. Lance Clifford, 364th HHC, Marysville, Wash, and the junior enlisted winner was Spc. David Bass, 96th Sustainment Brigade, Salt Lake City, Utah.

“This was a great competition and a good challenge. The warm terrain was also an added challenge,” said Clifford. “I still have a lot of work to do, but finishing near the top means I must be doing something right.”

Among the events, the competitors endured the Army physical fitness test, consisting of pushups, situps and a two mile-run, maneuvered through a land navigation course, fired M-4 rifles at the range and hiked a six-mile road march.

The competition was completed during a banquet, where certificates, medals, plaques and awards were handed out.
