FORWARD OPERATING BASE Q-WEST, Iraq – Forward Operating Base Q-West hosted a visit from Command Sgt. Maj. Marvin L. Hill, the command sergeant major for Multi-National Force-Iraq. Hill toured the base, talked with FOB commanders and assisted in reenlisting two Soldiers.

"Anytime you can get the command sergeant major to come all the way down here to visit you at Q-West, that ought to be a real big 'Hooah!'" said Col. Darrel K. Williams, commander of the 3rd Sustainment Brigade and FOB Q-West as he was addressing the Soldiers of the 3rd Sustainment Bde. "We are honored that (Command Sgt. Maj Hill) would take time out of his very busy schedule to come and spend not a couple hours, but a couple of days with the Sustainment Brigade."

Hill was the guest of honor at the re-enlistment of two Soldiers, Spc. Rebecca M. Overshown, Special Troops Battalion, and Sgt. Jeffery L. Warner, 416th Transportation Company, as both reenlisted to stay with the 3rd Sustainment Brigade.

"We got to grow our own," Hill said speaking to the Soldiers of the 3rd Sustainment Brigade about retention. "You know what you got when you grow them yourself and that's what retention is all about. Keeping our Army strong and growing the next generation of non-commissioned officers. It's about commitment; commitment to the nation, commitment to the mission, commitment to your brothers and sisters and bring everybody back home alive."

He toured the base, visiting various battalions and points of interest on FOB Q-West including the combat logistics patrol site, where Soldiers prepare to head out on convoys.

Hill then had lunch with the commanders and sergeant majors of FOB Q-West and went over their concerns and his for the current conditions of Iraq.

Hill then spoke on how to make the Soldier's better understand the reasons for being in Iraq and how to improve on their morale.

Hill said morale will go up and down depending on what is happening to their unit specifically. A unit that has just lost a Soldier in combat operations will have low morale no matter how many Green Beans coffee shops, the command team puts on the base. Likewise, another unit will have higher morale when they accomplish a mission while receiving praise.

Hill also said that to accomplish the mission command teams need to trust each other to tell the other the truth, respect one another, and recognize one another's weaknesses.

Hill added that Gen. David H. Petraeus, commanding general for Multi-National Force-Iraq, wished he could come and do the things Hill does, like visit the FOBs and camps around Iraq. Hill expressed his deep satisfaction with the Soldiers and command teams here.
