KUWAIT NAVAL BASE, Kuwait – Maj. Robert Bland III of Belvidere, Ill., with the 108th Sustainment Brigade took command of the Army Watercraft Company (Provisional) in a change of command ceremony Feb. 15 at Kuwait Naval Base, Kuwait.
Bland takes command from Maj. Michael Burgett of Columbus, Ohio with the 371st Sustainment Brigade. Burgett, a transportation officer by trade, said commanding the AWC (Provisional) was a unique experience.
“I once commanded a truck company, but never in my life did I think I’d ever command a boat company in the National Guard,” said Burgett. “It was a great opportunity, I got to see what Army mariners do and how they conduct business.”
Bland said he looks forward to the experience of commanding the AWC. The AWC commands several boats operated by teams of Soldiers trained and experienced in watercraft operations and maintenance.
“While many may not associate soldiers and boats, Army watercraft operations are critical to sustainment operations and humanitarian missions in this region,” said Bland. “I look forward to commanding the Army mariners and the boats serving in the Army Watercraft Company.”
