MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. – Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) New River hosted the 71st Annual Women's History celebration, "Celebrating Women of Character, Courage and Commitment," at the New River Officers’ Club, March 14.

Women Marines Association National President Dr. Betty Moseley-Brown was the guest speaker at the event organized by the Women Marines Association North Carolina Chapter-1, Tarheel Chapter (NC-1, Tarheel Chapter).

“Women by gender; Marines for life,” said Moseley-Brown in her introductory remarks left to resonate amongst the crowd comprised primarily of active-duty, former and retired female Marines.

She continued to speak about the remarkable progress throughout seven decades since first Women Marine Association Convention occurred in 1960 in Denver.

“We honor and embrace our sister Marines,” concluded Moseley-Brown right before the NC-1 Tarheel Chapter President Shirley Brown presented her with a certificate of appreciation.

Following the ceremony, Cpl. Nicole Gilstrap, CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter mechanic with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron (HMH) 461 and native of Quantico, Va., spoke about her experience and pride in the Corps.

“There’s such a small percentage, and we have such a strong bond,” Gilstrap said. “I know I can go up to any female Marine and share stories and share experience. They always talk about this brotherhood the Marine Corps has, well there’s a sisterhood too.”

The sisterhood of women in the Corps was displayed throughout the corridors and main dining room of the Officers’ Club where Linda Lacy, NC-1 Tarheel Chapter Vice President, and Julia Hamblet award winner, had an extensive Women Marines History exhibit available for viewing before and after the ceremony.

One of the pictures on display was of NC-1’s President, Shirley John, when she served in the Corps at Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Lejeune during the Korean War from 1954 to 1955. She was wearing the same green bucket cover in the picture that female Marines wear today.

“I am very proud of them (today’s female Marines). They are doing far beyond anything that we were ever allowed to do,” explained John. “They say they’re following in our footsteps, but they’re making some awful big footsteps for other people to follow in too.”

Gen. Robert F. Castellvi, Marine Corps Installations East – MCB Camp Lejeune commanding general, and Col. Timothy M. Salmon, MCAS New River commanding general were also in attendance. Before the ceremony Col. Salmon spoke to the crowd briefly about his great-aunt who served in World War II, his wife who served in the Navy and his two daughters who are currently at the United States Military Academy and his absolute appreciation for women serving in today’s military.

This is the second time in seven years MCAS New River hosted the Women’s History celebration.
