    Commander, Submarine Group Nine

KEYPORT, Wash. - Submarine Development Squadron (SUBDEVRON) 5 held a change of command ceremony March 17 at the Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport, Wash.

Capt. Douglas Perry relieved Capt. Jeffrey T. Jablon as commodore.

"From forward deployed mission execution to shipyard performance and everything in between that we, in the submarine force, hold dear the submarines in DEVRON 5 under Commodore Jablon's tenure have performed superbly." said Commander of Submarine Force U.S. Pacific Fleet Rear Adm. Phillip Sawyer, the ceremony's guest speaker. "Jeff has steadfastly provided both the vision and execution to enable and further the development of the Navy's people and systems that are integral to our national security, now and in the future. [His] successes are the submarine force's successes, they are the U.S. Navy's and for our nation."

As commodore of Submarine Development Squadron 5 since August 2012, Jablon developed the way ahead for unmanned undersea vehicles and oversaw successful missions of all three Seawolf-class submarines at sea and during shipyard maintenance period.

"I can say with great conviction that my time as commodore was one of the most professionally satisfying jobs I have held in the Navy," said Jablon. "Was it because of the cool things we do at DEVRON? Well, some of that has to do with it. However, the real reason was due to the sailors, officers and civilians that are part of and support DEVRON 5."

Jablon's next assignment will be in Millington, Tenn., where he will serve on the staff of the Commander, Navy Personnel Command.

Capt. Douglas Perry arrives from Washington D.C., where he served as the Undersea Influence branch chief for the director of Undersea Warfare, OPNAV N97.

His operational assignments included tours as commanding officer of USS Pasadena (SSN 752) and executive officer of USS Maine (SSBN 741).

"To my shipmates, former and now DEVRON 5: thank you for developing me as a submariner, a leader and commanding officer, a father and a husband," said Perry. "I will repay your commitment and investment in me by leading DEVRON 5 in delivering unique warfighting capabilities far forward, capabilities which sustain, enhance and expand our undersea dominance to secure our great nation's freedom and security."

Submarine Development Squadron 5 is charged with multiple submarine warfare mission areas to include submarine rescue operations and the activities of its three Seawolf-class submarines. Submarine Development Squadron 5 is responsible for developing and testing new submarine warfare capabilities, including the use of unmanned undersea vehicles.
