OSAN, Republic of Korea – Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10216 paid tribute to U.S. military women of the past and present during a program at their post in Osan, March 21.

The ceremony was part of a series of events held throughout the Korean peninsula honoring Women’s History Month and this year’s theme of character, courage, and commitment.

The program was titled “A Tribute to Women in the Military” and featured guest speaker Rear Adm. Lisa Franchetti, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Korea.

“This is the first time in Korea that we have had a female flag or general officer who can represent women in the military, and we were really honored that she could come speak to everyone today,” said Ernest Lee, post commander. “She is a dynamic person and she has a lot to bring to the military and especially all of the women across our forces.”

Describing the history of women in the military and the continuing progression of women in the armed forces, Rear Adm. Franchetti also discussed the importance of mentorship and the role that senior leaders have played in shaping her career progression.

“When I look back at my 28-year Navy career, there have been notable women-leaders I believe captured the essence of the journey women have made in achieving greater empowerment and leadership opportunities in the U.S. armed services,” said Franchetti. “These were women that we could imagine ourselves following in their footsteps. We salute those women that have gone before us, we honor them, and we thank them for their dedicated and faithful service to our nation.”

Following her remarks, Rear Adm. Franchetti’s joined VFW members in unveiling a new exhibit at the entrance to the VFW post featuring historic photographs honoring women veterans and their service during the Korean War.

“As veterans, we wanted to honor women and acknowledge their sacrifices in our own way,” said Lee. “These very special veterans we are honoring today are women who served and assisted in the defense of our nation, from the American Revolution to present.”
