International Security Assistance Force –Afghanistan
KABUL, Afghanistan (Sep. 10) – ISAF soldiers treated a number of local civilians and Afghan National Police after they were targeted by a suicide bomber in southern Gereshk this evening. The bomber was driving a motorized rickshaw when he blew himself up next to the bus station at the canal bridge on Highway 1. As many as 26 people were killed during the blast.
Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF provided immediate assistance following the incident. Afghan National Security Forces were deployed to secure the area around the site of the explosion and 13 casualties were evacuated to a nearby ISAF/Afghan National Army base for treatment. A further 45 casualties were admitted to the hospital at Gereshk.

"This is the second time within a week that innocent civilians have been deliberately targeted in Helmand by Taliban insurgents and is one of the biggest attacks of this type we've seen," said Lt. Col. Charlie Mayo, ISAF spokesperson. "We immediately offered assistance to the local authorities and are providing emergency treatment to some of the victims."
