CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait. – On March 27, 2014, the 949th Medical Detachment (Veterinary Services) held a transfer of authority ceremony with the 719th Medical Detachment (Veterinary Services). Both units have been conducting relief in place operations, which is the process by which units work side by side to learn tactics, techniques, policies, and procedures to ensure mission success.
Col. Lisa Doumont, commander of the 3rd Medical Command (Deployment Support), served as the keynote speaker, and thanked leaders and soldiers of the 949th for a job well done.
“The 40 member unit protected our most precious commodity – our U.S. soldiers – by ensuring food safety and food defense practices for over 200,000 Department of Defense personnel throughout the US Central Command area of responsibility,” said Doumont.
She concluded by expressing her gratitude on behalf of the command, and the thousands of soldiers and patients they served along the way.
During the ceremony, Lt. Col. Leonard Anderson, outgoing commander of the 949th Medical Detachment (Veterinary Services), praised his team for a job well done and remarked on their “innate ability to accomplish the mission well.”
Lt. Col. Anderson and his team arrived in Kuwait in July 2013 by way of Ames, IA. During the deployment, the unit provided full spectrum veterinary services in 6 countries.
The incoming 719th Medical Detachment (Veterinary Services) is eager to continue the legacy of the 949th in order to make mission. “We will build on the accomplishments of the 949th, (and) my success will be dependent on you,” said incoming commander Lt. Col. Ray Rudd.
The 719th Medical Detachment (Veterinary Services) is a United States Army Reserve unit from Ft. Sheridan, Illinois.
