JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - A dozen military instructors were recognized for their efforts during the 20th annual Instructor of the Year luncheon at the USO of North Carolina in Jacksonville, March 20.
Marines and sailors from Marine Corps Combat Service Support Schools, Marine Corps Engineer School, Field Medical Training Battalion, School of Infantry, Marine Special Operations School and other schools in the area were honored at the event in front of their peers and leaders.
“They provide leadership from reveille to lights out,” said Col. Paul Bertholf, the commanding officer of Marine Combat Service Support Schools. “Beside what is in the program of instruction, they talk to them about the little things, like what life is like in the fleet and what it’s like to be in combat. They talk to them about the things they need to know to go into the operating forces and be able to perform. That is a tall order for all instructors, and here we have represented the best of the best.”
Each school uses its own selection process to determine their Instructor of the Year.
“It felt great (to be recognized),” said Staff Sgt. Christopher Ballard, the motor transport operators course manager with Marine Combat Service Support Schools’ Logistics Operations School. “It was something I wasn’t expecting. I really appreciate it. It was a personal goal and achieving it felt great.”
Instructors are a great influence to students and will be remembered by them for the rest of their lives, said Joe Houle, a retired Marine. After more than 30 years Houle still receives correspondence from service members he taught throughout the world.
The awards were presented by Mainstreet, an organization that bring businesses together to honor service members. Mainstreet also recognizes the Marine and sailor of the year during the Marine Corps Installations East award breakfast and recognizes a heroic service member with the John A. Lejeune award for bravery at the American Hero Award event.
The skills students learn during training help keep them safe, and thus it’s important to ensure instructors are recognized, said John Reed, the chief executive officer of Mainstreet and a retired soldier.
“(None of the awards provided by Mainside) are more important than the Instructor of the Year,” said Reed.
The winners included Marine Combat Service Support Schools’ Gunnery Sgt. Hector Vicente, from
Personnel Administration School, Staff Sgt. Guillermo Vazquez from Financial Management School, Staff Sgt. Christopher Ballad from Logistics Operations School and Staff Sgt. Ramon Karney from Ground Supply School.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Joshua Bowers from Field Medical Training Battalion, Sgt. Andrew Gossin from Marine Corps Engineer School, Gunnery St. Pettal Ward from the Staff Noncommissioned Officer Academy, Gunnery Sgt. Christopher Dowd from Marine Special Operations School, Staff Sgt. Bradley Largo from the Center of Naval Aviation Technical Training, and Chief Petty Officer Jeremiah Johnson from Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune were also recognized.
The School of Infantry recognized Sgt. Cory Erdie with Infantry Training Battalion and Gunnery Sgt. Aubrey Wrenn with Marine Combat Training.
