OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea – The 607th Materiel Maintenance Squadron officially realigned under the 607th Air Support Operations Group during a ceremony at the squadron’s headquarters on Daegu Air Base, Republic of Korea, March 28.
Before the ceremony, the 607th MMS fell under the Logistics Readiness Division of the 7th Air Force Staff.
The 607th MMS consists of 90 Airmen and 350 civilians whose mission is to warehouse war reserve material for “turn-the-key” operations in the event of a hostile attack or emergency. The squadron maintains munitions, rations, tents, fuel, vehicles and flightline equipment at Daegu and five additional Co-located Operating Bases (COBs).
“The mission we do here stretches across five COBs on the Korean Peninsula,” said Master Sergeant David Carr, 607th MMS First Sergeant. “We can take these COBs and spin them up to full-scale fighter wings at a moment’s notice.”
Under the new alignment, the 607th MMS falls under the 607th ASOG, with the 607th MMS commander answering the 607th ASOG commander rather than directly to the 7th AF staff. Carr said the realignment will provide better administrative, tactical, and operational oversight within the command structure for the 607th MMS Airmen.
“For the unit here, it provides better chain of command stability, which meets the Air Force's organizational intent of commanders working for commanders,” Carr said. “This realignment happened for the Airmen.”
