CAMP ROBERTS, Calif. – In keeping with the readiness requirements for the upcoming deployment to the Pacific, Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 4 traveled to the National Guard Ranges at Camp Roberts, Calif. for Fire Team Leader training.

Under the instruction and supervision of Naval Construction Group One (NCG1), motivated Seabees received training on leadership development, individual combat skills, land navigation, patrolling and defensive operations.

From March 10- 15 NMCB 4 had a class of 32 students engaged in the Fire Team Leader exercise. Lt. j.g. Delroy McEwan, the officer-in-charge of the course, and Chief Utilitiesman Darryn Nelson, the assistant officer-in-charge, coordinated with NCG1 instructors throughout the exercise to maintain the moral of the students and provide all logistic support necessary for a successful and safe evolution.

The day to day activities of the exercise varied from classroom lecture sessions to practical application and live fire at several firing ranges. The exercise was engaging and kept the students interest at every level.

“I believe this was a good opportunity for the student,” said Utilitiesman 1st Class Edward Payne, the leading petty officer. “All petty officers should get the privilege of partaking in training exercise of such high quality.”

Classroom instruction was given on each weapon system, followed by live fire. Weapons such as the M203 Grenade Launcher, M18A1 Claymore Mine, M136 AT4 Antitank Rocket, M16A3/M4A1 and M67 hand grenades were used during the course.

Classes on communication equipment were also given, specifically the RF-310 Radio. Valuable instruction on how to clear the radio of any information and basic programming of the radio were given.

The students did day and night patrols, in which they received instructions on use of compasses and night vision goggles. The instruction was very engaging and kept the students interest at every level.

The exercise was successful as all personnel safely returned from the high risk training, a training which is critical in the mission readiness for NMCB 4.
