LOS ANGELES – First Lt. Joshua Wallace assumed command of the 311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command Headquarters Company from Maj. Sonya Carter, who had led the unit for two years, in a change of command ceremony at the U.S. Army Reserve Center in West Los Angeles, Calif., March 5.
Wallace entered the Army in March 2005 and qualified as an all wheel mechanic. After completing the ROTC Simultaneous Membership Program and graduating from the University of Montana, he earned a commission in transportation. He also deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
“I want to thank all of the mentors who have helped me get to this point,” said Wallace. “I intend to continue the work of taking the issues from red to green. It is all about taking care of Soldiers. ”
It was a beautiful and sunny Southern Californian day. It was a small ceremony, but the close-knit unit had a heartfelt event.
The core of the ceremony was the formal transfer of authority and responsibility. Master Sgt. Emilio, who is the keeper of the colors, passed the colors to the outgoing commander, Maj. Sonya Carter.
She then passed the colors to the deputy commander, Col. Andrew Wichers, symbolizing the relinquishment of her command.
He then delivered the colors to Wallace, transferring the command to him. Finally, the new commander passed the colors back to the first sergeant, who is charged with protecting it. At the end of the ceremony, the deputy commander ordered the new HHC commander to take charge of his headquarters.
In her closing remarks, Carter said, “I hope I have served you well because you all have served me well.”
At the end of the ceremony, the unit lined up to give their beloved commander a farewell hug.
The headquarters company is usually referred to by its abbreviation as an HHC and is made up of the headquarters staff and headquarters support personnel administratively assigned, and assisted by key officers and primary staff officers.
The mission of the 311th ESC is to command the sustainment bridges that provide combat support and combat service support in the areas of supply, maintenance, transportation and field services.
