Story by 1st Lt. Fernando Ochoa

    311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – First Lt. Michael Hurtado, 304th Sustainment Brigade anti-terrorism/force protection officer, graduated from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officer Basic Training Academy at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick, Ga. April 10.

Academy students learn about the structure of the federal government and the law enforcement mission of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, studying five separate courses, including Applied Authority, U.S. Customs Operations, Nationality and Immigration Law.

Specifically, interns learn about the founding principles on which the U.S. government was built, including the importance of limiting the power exercised by government officials and protecting rights and liberties.

“I wanted to become a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officer because I wanted to have the enormous responsibility of detecting any threats of terrorism or smuggling of contraband,” said Hurtado. “Where I am from, and will be working at, drugs are a serious hindrance on the population.”

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agent and CBP Officer Basic Academy develops recruits that must learn critical tasks to ensure that training lessons are congruent with tasks performed in the field.

Hurtado served as the class leader and received an Outstanding Performance Award and Distinguished Honor Graduate Award.

“Graduating feels like such a weight has been lifted off my shoulders,” said Hurtado. “My short term goals are to be able to learn my job, establish a good lifestyle for my wife and daughter, and strengthen my relationship with God.”

Professionalism and integrity are instrumental to an officer's training that, in addition to their specific duties, is woven throughout their careers.
