    BISMARCK, N.D. - For the first time in more than 15 years, the N.D. Army National Guard's chaplain corps will be at full strength. First Lt. Yacob Makonnen, who is a chaplain candidate with the Fargo-based 141st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, will be reappointed as an Army chaplain and promoted to the rank of captain during a formal ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 17 in the theater of the Raymond J. Bohn Armory in Bismarck.

    Makonnen's appointment will fill one of eight chaplain positions in the N.D. Army National Guard.

    Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk, North Dakota adjutant general, will preside over tomorrow's ceremony.

    The National Guard chaplaincy provides religious support to Soldiers and their families and assists commanders in ensuring the right of free exercise of religion for all their members. While providing pastoral care and counseling to Guard members and their families, chaplains also advise the commanders and staff on matters pertaining to religion, morals and morale.

    Makonnen, who is an ordained Baptist minister, holds a Master of Divinity degree from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. He also completed a 12-week Chaplain Basic Officer Leadership Course in Fort Jackson, S.C., to fulfill his training requirements and become a qualified chaplain. He will be assigned to the Bismarck-based 68th Troop Command.

    Makonnen currently lives in Fargo, N.D., with his wife, Kim.
