YUMA PROVING GROUND, Ariz. - Marines and sailors with Headquarters and Service Company and India Company along with attachments from Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, took to the firing line to send some lead down range aboard Yuma Proving Grounds, Ariz., March 27, 2014.

Marines with Headquarters and Service Company took this opportunity to get out of their offices and participate in the live fire range.

Corporal Nathaniel Theocles a Massachusetts native and a machine gunner with Weapons Company was taking a part in the live fire range by helping the shooters ensure their sights were set and were able to hit the target.

“During this training I was in charge of making sure the sights were correctly set on the rifles and to oversee the actual firing of the rifles,” said Theocles.

Empty shell casings were flying as the Marines sent rounds downrange to hit the targets. As the safety instructors called out targets the Marines changed their aim and let loose a burst of rounds down range to meet the target previously called out.

Lance Cpl. Damar Walker, a Milwaukee native and an administrative specialist with Headquarters and Service Company, was one of the Marines taking part in the live fire range in which he shot the M249 light machine gun and the 240G machine gun.

Walker is a member of the battalion’s guard force, which is tasked with the overall security of the Forward Operating Base.

“We took part in classes over the 240G and the M249 in preparation for the live firing range,” said Walker.

The classes allowed the Marines and sailors to familiarize themselves with the weapons before they got behind it on the firing line.

“Being able to get out of the office and get behind the machine gun made me want to stay there and keep firing,” said Walker. “I like to take any chance I can, to get different training.”

“We worked with the Marines on the firing line to help them better orientate themselves with the weapon system and be able to use their ammunition sufficiently,” said Theocles. “I feel as if the training went smooth and that the Marines who fired the weapon systems shot well.”
