BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - New York Army National Guard Lt. Col. Christopher Guilmette, a Voorheesville resident, is the new commander of the 204th Engineer Battalion, headquartered in Binghamton.
He replaces Lt. Col. James Freehart, who took command of the battalion in 2011. Freehart has been tapped to assume command of the 153rd Troop Command in Buffalo.
Guilmette has served in the Army National Guard since 1997, when he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Maryland Army National Guard. He joined the New York Army National Guard in 2005.
In civilian life Guilmette is a principle at kW Mission Critical Engineering, a Troy technology engineering company.
The 204th Engineer Battalion is the only engineer battalion in the New York Army National Guard. The battalion has companies in Kingston, Walton, and Horseheads, along with one company and the unit headquarters in Binghamton.
The battalion was heavily involved in the New York National Guard's assistance to local authorities during Tropical Storms Irene and Lee in 2011, Superstorm Sandy in 2012, and flash flooding in the Hudson Valley in the summer of 2013.
The battalion's companies regularly conduct local projects across the state: revamping a firetower on Beacon Mountain and helping to create a park along the route of the Erie Canal in Cohoes, for example. The battalion deployed an engineer company to Afghanistan in 2010 and 2011.
Companies of the battalion deployed to Germany in 2013 and earlier this year to building training facilities at military bases there.
Guilmette has served as an engineer company commander-to include an active duty stint as his company served as a security force at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., and the intelligence officer, plans officer, and operations officer for the 204th Engineer Battalion. He has served as a traditional part-time Guard Soldier and a full-time Guard officer.
From 2010 to 2013 he served as the Brigade Engineer for the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in Syracuse. This included an active duty deployment to Kuwait in 2012. His most recent assignment, prior to taking command of the battalion, was as liaison officer with the 42nd Infantry Division in Troy.
Guilmette holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His military education includes the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced courses, Combined Arms Staff Services School and Command and General Staff College.
His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Global War on Terrorism Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon, and the Maryland National Guard Outstanding Unit Award.
He and his wife Kelly have three children.
