CREECH AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- The sons and daughters of service members stationed at Creech Air Force Base were welcomed on base with their families as part of the national Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work program April 24, 2014.
The program aims to not only expose children to what their parents do during the work day, but also to show the value of their education and provide an opportunity for them to be inspired into making plans for the future.
At Creech, the children were able to see how their parent or parents help defend the country as a whole and keep fellow service members safe overseas. This year marked the first time Creech has hosted the program.
“It seemed to be the perfect opportunity to honor our children during the month of the military child,” said Tech. Sgt. Robert Warder, Creech Airmen and Family Readiness Center NCO in charge. “It’s important that we take time to include them so they can understand where moms and dads go when they’re gone during the day.”
It wasn’t all business though; the Creech A&FRC provided a plethora of events including demonstrations from the local fire department, work center tours, and a professional magician and DJ.
"I thought today was a fun day I got to see planes and see what people do when they come to work," said Avah, 7. "I had the greatest time spending the day with my mommy; it was the best part of my day."
Children were also able to view the MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper remotely piloted aircraft up close. For many Airmen this was the first time they were able to share this type of experienced with their children.
“I think this event was great,” said 1st Lt. Shannon, 18th Reconnaissance Squadron. “This was the first time that I was able to show my son what I do and have him spend time with other military families and children like him.”
Leadership from the 432nd Wing/432nd Air Expeditionary Wing expressed the value of including the families and making them feel like part of the Hunter family.
“Event’s like these give us the opportunity to showcase what the Airmen do to keep their families and the families of others safe,” said Col. James Chittenden, 432nd Wing vice commander. “With Creech being such a remote area we value the opportunity to host this type of event.”
In all, about 600 Airmen and their families attended the day’s events.
“It’s nice to see other Airmen with their families, it makes us all seem more human,” said Shannon.
