    70th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The 4175th Military Police Detachment was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation during a recent ceremony for their exceptional performance during their deployment in 2010 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn.

The detachment, based in Fulton, Missouri, provided investigative support, rule of law development and protective services in Iraq and Kuwait.

Soldiers worked with active duty units in field offices in Iraq and Kuwait conducting felony investigations and providing security for visiting Department of Defense dignitaries.

Chief Warrant Officer 3 Tim Forney, the detachment commander, said they received their deployment orders on very short notice.

“It was an honor and a privilege to serve with my soldiers,” he said. “Like any commanding officer, I asked them to accomplish the mission, and I think they really gave me much more than that.”

Soldiers in the unit have served on protection details for the former Secretary of Defense and the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In one large theft investigation, the unit stopped more than $2 billion lost in theft annually. In another, they investigated an instance where a soldier was illegally trading bulk. Because of the 4175th’s undercover investigation, the suspect received prosecution.

The 4175th was formed June 1, 2004, with the mission to provide criminal investigation support and personal security for the Pentagon and Department of the Army senior staff.

The detachment consisted predominantly of Missouri National Guard Soldiers and Airmen and prior service Soldiers.

Since the detachment’s activation, members have also deployed to Kosovo, where Soldiers acted as liaisons with the United Nations, European Union and Kosovo law enforcement agencies, as well as training and supporting the commanding general’s Protective Services Team.

Additional missions included the Pentagon’s Office of Detainee Periodic Review, Task Force Raptor, National Guard Bureau Provost Marshall Law Enforcement Threat Cell and The Missouri National Guard Counter Drug program.

The Detachment’s colors were retired during the ceremony, symbolizing the official deactivation of the detachment and the end of this portion of the unit’s history.

A unit’s colors have historically served as the point where the organization’s Soldiers rallied in battle.

“Everyone in the unit is continuing on in their military careers,” Forney said. “We’ve gained a lot of training and experiences that we can take with us, along with the friendships we’ve forged.”

The Meritorious Unit Commendation is awarded to units for exceptionally meritorious conduct in performance of outstanding services for at least six continuous months during a period of military operations against an armed enemy on or after January 1, 1944. The degree of achievement required is the same as that which would warrant the award of the Legion of Merit to an individual.
