JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. — The 76th Operational Response Command partnered with the 99th Regional Support Command to put on the Best Warrior Competition here April 20-25.

The weeklong competition was co-hosted by both commands in order to test their competitor’s physical and mental strength, military knowledge and ability to function under pressure.

"The BWC program is an excellent opportunity that allows our super troops to demonstrate and apply the Soldier and leadership skills they have honed over the start of their career," said Command Sgt. Maj. James Peter M. Matthews, CSM of the 76th ORC. "The program itself highlights just the start of the success of our future leaders."

Support staff from both the 99th RSC and the 76th ORC worked together during all phases of the competition to ensure that the events ran smoothly and safely.

"I feel great about it [the BWC]. You've got great people you're competing against and you've got great events you're doing," said Sgt. Christopher Meyer, winner of the BWC and a firefighter with the 302nd Information Operations Battalion out of Flushing, N.Y. "From top to bottom I have nothing bad to say about it. The only thing that is on my wish list is that they threw even more at us because the one thing that I've learned after doing this two years in a row is that the tougher this is, the more pride you feel when it's over. This year was just fantastic; I had a blast."

The competition consisted of multiple events such as the Army Physical Fitness Test, M16 qualification range, move-and-shoot range, urban warfare range, combatives, a 7-mile road march, and both day and night land navigation.

After competing in all of the events, competitors were then required to present themselves to a board of senior noncommissioned officers, while in their dress uniform, to be judged on their appearance, military knowledge, customs and courtesies as well as their general demeanor and ability to operate under stress.

"Our support staff came together from several downtrace units," said Sgt. Maj. Terry Wong, G237 of the 76th ORC as well as one of the support staff helping with the event. "Most staff worked together for the first time and they arrived prepared and quickly adapted to the many changes that fell upon them. Everyone came together to provide the competitors a challenging and strenuous competition."
