FORT CUSTER, Mich. - U.S Army soldiers of the 177th Regiment Regional Training Institute at Fort Custer participated in the second annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event located on Veteran Affairs Medical Center of Battle Creek on April 30, 2014.
The event highlights the U.S. Army Sexual Harassment Assault Response Program (SHARP) commitment to eliminate incidents of sexual harassment and sexual assault through awareness and prevention, training, victim advocacy, reporting, and accountability.
“The collaboration between soldiers and the community is important because you never understand a person until you walk a mile in their shoes,” says Staff Sgt. Terrell Robinzine of Chicago. “As a student, it was fulfilling and rewarding at the same time”.
The Soldiers who reside on Fort Custer are on training status, but when they heard about the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event, they jumped at the opportunity to show their support. They wore T-shirts to show solidarity with their community and pledge that they will do their part to fight and bring attention to sexual assaults.
“The event went really well. We had 100 percent class participation plus there were personnel from Navy and Department of Defense civilians” says Staff Sgt. Tiffanie Clawson, instructor stationed at Fort Custer. “This was the first year as a class for us, but we plan on attending every year.”
Sexual Assault Awareness Month is an opportunity to highlight the corrosive effect sexual assault has on Soldiers, unit readiness, team cohesion, command climate and trust. Observation of SAAM events spread the message of SHARP and how to fight it.
