WHEELER ARMY AIRFIELD, Hawaii – U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii was named the top installation in the Army and awarded the 2014 Army Community of Excellence Award.

The program is an annual Army-wide assessment of all aspects of installation management where Army installations submit their strategic plans, improvements and innovations as part of an 18-month process to be evaluated and scored by trained experts.

One of U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii’s accomplishments of note was institutionalizing a cost savings culture resulting in initiatives that saved $700,000 in fiscal year 2013 and more than $61 million since fiscal year 2010.

Col. Daniel Whitney, U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii outgoing commander, explained what it takes to win an award of this caliber.

“It’s a very difficult competition,” Whitney said. “We’re looking at the whole enterprise of installation management command. What it really takes to win this is not only a great garrison team but our tenant organizations, partners and suppliers as a whole of installation approach.”

Commitment to excellence and professionalism is required in order to be competitive for the award said the commander.

“We have a handpicked team here of great professionals that are committed to excellence,” Whitney said. “Not only are they committed to excellence in the garrison centric world but they’re committed to excellence in producing and integrating with our tenant organizations, partners and suppliers.

According to Whitney, maintaining a team effort mindset is important and is a mentality needed to be competitive in earning this kind of award.

“It’s all about teamwork,” Whitney said. “From U.S. Army Pacific at General Brooks level all the way through to that private in the 25th Infantry Division, as well as all those folks in between. This award is for them.”

Earning the Army level award serves as a tribute to the efforts and results that those assigned to U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii commit to and achieve Whitney said.

“It’s a true testament to our community committed to doing the right things,” Whitney said. “We have a good plan to mitigate the effects of whatever the environment brings us. My hats off and I thank everybody in U.S. Army Hawaii for their hard work as well as producing outcomes.”
