CAMP BUEHRING, Kuwait – Standing at attention in front of more than 500 of their subordinates, peers and superiors, six noncommissioned officers and Soldiers of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, waited to hear their name called to be able to step forward on the Oasis Stage, Camp Buehring, Kuwait, May 1.
The two lucky Soldiers to hear their names called were Sgt. Tyree Kitchen, power generation equipment repairer, Company B, 204th Brigade Support Battalion, and Spc. Elizabeth Laskey, intelligence analyst, Company A, 2nd Special Troops Battalion.
Kitchen and Laskey, along with the four other Soldiers, competed in the three-day competition that required them to take an Army Physical Fitness Test, a 50-question test, write a two-page essay, complete situational training exercises and qualify with their assigned weapon.
Laskey, a native of Vincennes, Indiana, spoke about what set her apart from her peers.
“I feel like the essay was one of my strongest suits,” said Laskey. “My question was what do you believe to be the most important Army Value, and I chose selfless service. I think they are all important, but I think selfless service plays a role in all of them. To have integrity, you need to know it isn't just about you or what benefits you the most.”
For Kitchen, a native of Florence, Alabama, he said participating in the event allowed him to refine his basic Soldier skills.
“I enjoyed the NCO of the Year board due to the fact it was a three-day event where each Soldier had time to prepare and represent our battalion without the normal everyday stresses,” said Kitchen.
With Kitchen and Laskey now knowing what it takes to win at the brigade level, they both are planning to succeed when they take on their next challenge, the U.S. Army Central Best Warrior of the Year Competition.
“I know it is going to be the toughest board so far, and I’m excited for it,” said Laskey. “The brigade board set me up for success.”
Kitchen knows he is ready for the ARCENT board.
“As of right now, I am as confident as I can be,” said Kitchen. “I'm just humbled to go represent my brigade at the ARCENT level. I want to win this not only for me, but for the entire brigade so that Soldiers can be proud of their unit and everyone gets the title of being a winner or being the best.”
The ARCENT board is toward the end of May and Kitchen and Laskey are prepared to compete at the next level.
