AMHERST, N.Y. - New York Army National Guard Lt. Col. Dave Powell, a veteran of the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and an Amherst resident, has been selected to become the next commander of the New York National Guard's Camp Smith Training Site garrison.
The 1,585-acre facility, located on the Hudson River just north of Peekskill, is the New York National Guard's premier training facility. Dating back to 1882 and named for Governor Al Smith in 1924, Camp Smith is also used for training by the United States Military Academy, the Army Reserve, and law enforcement agencies.
Powell, who is the chief of training for the National Guard's Directorate of Plans, Operations, Training and Readiness, will take command of the facility from Lt. Col. Robert Epp in the fall.
Powell started his Army service as an enlisted Soldier in the United States Army Reserve in 1986. In 1990 he received his commission as a Second Lieutenant from Niagara University's Reserve Officer Training Corps program and joined the New York Army National Guard's 1st Battalion 174th Infantry.
Powell has served as a company and battalion fire support officer, artillery battery commander, assistant division joint fires coordinator, cavalry squadron operations officer and executive officer, and training branch chief for the New York Army National Guard.
He deployed to Tikrit, Iraq in 2004 with the 42nd Infantry Division and served in Kabul, Afghanistan in 2008 with the 2nd Squadron 101st Cavalry as part of Afghan Regional Security Command- Kabul.
He also deployed to New York City in 2001 as part of the New York National Guard's response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and served in a federal security mission as part of Operation Nobel Eagle in 2002.
Powell holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Political Science from Niagara University and Juris Doctorate from Albany Law School. He is a graduate of the Army's Command and General Staff College.
His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, the NATO Medal and the Army Parachutist Badge.
Powell and his wife Holly have a daughter, Piper. His parents David and Donna Powell live in Gowanda.
