LETNICA, Kosovo - Multinational Battle Group-East (MNBG-E) Commander, Col. Charles ‘Chuck’ Hensley presented his thoughts on leadership recently while speaking to newly elected Kosovo Rotary Club officers at the annual leadership and training seminar held on Saturday, May 17, outside Letnica, in a local restaurant.

Hensley, a member of the Pristina Rotary, was asked to give the presentation and discuss how leadership is similar for the new officers of the Rotary and for the members of KFOR-18 that keep a Safe and Secure environment in Kosovo.

“Leaders in the military and in the Rotary have to have the same leadership skills,” said Hensley. “They have to be positive, think about what they wish to communicate to their members, and know where they want the organization to go in strategic planning for the future.”

Hensly talked about his learning of leadership skills throughout his military career, and how he progressed with each new experience.

“There are levels of leadership that we all have to learn,” said Hensley. “The first is direct leadership where you have direct contact with your people.”

“The second level is organizational, where the leaders have to communicate information to the people through others—and so how you communicate in this capacity is very important. You must make sure as a leader, to be clear and concise in your communication, so all of the organization’s people will clearly understand your intent.”

“The last level of leadership is that of strategic leadership,” he continued. “This is for a skilled leader to have the insight of how they want the organization to develop and become—to have a long-term plan and guide the organization to it.”

Hensley commended the Rotarians on their time in the organization. “People come to you as Rotarians to be part of this volunteer force and to be part of a positive organization that can make changes for the good,” he said.

“We have to walk these paths of leadership together and learn to become good leaders so we can have a heliotropic effect on the people around us and have positive energy that people will be attracted to it like plants to the light,” said Hensley, referring to the fact that people are attracted to quality leadership.

Hensley concluded with his final thought. “We’ve got to know what we should know about the organization and learn what we can with our experiences and remember the objectives of the Rotary. Being a member is a calling that has to have a balance between your career, the Rotary and your family, but when done successfully, we, together, will serve, and little by little, will make great changes for Kosovo.”
