SCHWEINFURT, Germany - More than 200 Soldiers, civilians and family members watched intensely as the 44th Expeditionary Signal Battalion's colors were cased, signifying the beginning of the unit's journey to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom this Spring.
Lt. Col. Dwayne A. Dickens, 44th Signal Battalion Commander and Command Sgt. Maj. Demetrius R. Steel, Battalion Command Sergeant Major, cased the colors and will be leading Companies A and C during the year-long deployment.
"What we have before us is an expeditionary signal battalion that will prove to be the most effective organization of this kind to have deployed," said Col. John K. Arnold, 7th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade Commander. "The rigorous training schedule has prepared the young soldiers for everything they will face in Afghanistan."
Both companies have been preparing to depart for more than a year, proving that 44th ESB "is a fully manned and highly trained and motivated expeditionary signal battalion which is ready to rock," said Lt. Col. Dwayne A. Dickens.
