NAVAL AIR STATION JOINT RESERVE BASE FORT WORTH, Texas - The Marines and poolees of Recruiting Sub-station Amarillo, Recruiting Station Albuquerque, 8th Marine Corps District, combined efforts with Officer Selection Team Lubbock and Amarillo College for a Combat Fitness Challenge May 10 at Amarillo College.
“(Today), we tried to bring together members of the community and young poolees to share the opportunities in the Marine Corps,” said Maj. Paul Harris, Commanding Officer of Recruiting Station Albuquerque. “It’s crucial to have the community out to show them what we do, through the intangibles, such as, initiative, dedication, dependability and we return quality citizens to west Texas.”
The challenge consisted of a modified Combat Fitness Test (CFT) followed by a CrossFit workout.
The CFT portion mirrored the Marines' annual fitness requirement with the exception of the 880-yard sprint. The participants pushed 30-pound ammunition cans above their heads as many times as possible in two minutes. They then completed an agility course consisting of a fireman’s carry, buddy drag, high and low crawls, and ammunition can carry.
The CFT proved to be the hardest part for the participants.
“The [agility] course was the hardest part,” said Mark Murillo, a member of the Amarillo community and the top performer of the novice group. “I’m not sure what was so hard about it; it just threw me for a loop. I came out after football and track and thought it would be easy, but I was wrong.”
The CrossFit portion had many different stations requiring completion of maximum repetitions in one minute, with only small breaks between exercises. The exercises were push-ups, rope climbs, Olympic ring pull-ups, thrusters, box jumps, farmers walk and battle ropes.
Each segment of the event was scored and compiled to determine the final standings. There were two divisions, male and female. The top two in each division competed in a head-to-head battle to find out who was the top dog.
The overall female winner was Madison Spitler, a dental hygiene major at Amarillo College, and the male winner was Steven Miller, a poolee from Recruiting Sub-station Amarillo.
“It was a very successful event for the community and the college,” said J.R. Norman, the intramural coordinator at Amarillo College. “Everybody had a chance to meet new people and find out what the Marines do. I just want to thank the Marines and I hope we can do this again.”
