FORT HOOD Texas– The 3rd Cavalry Regiment celebrated its 168th birthday May 14 to 16 with activities designed to bring troopers and their families closer together, build teamwork and boost morale.
The festivities began in the morning of May 14 with a Spouse’s Spur Ride, where family members participated in a M9 pistol range, training scenarios in a virtual reality simulator, an obstacle course, and a 2-mile ruck march in order to earn a spur-shaped charm.
The celebration continued May 15 when troopers marched to Veterans Field, the starting point for the annual Regimental Birthday Run. The run began with a motivational speech given by Col. Cameron Cantlon, the commander of 3rd Cavalry Regiment.
“Today we are gathered to celebrate the legacy of the 3rd Cavalry Regiment and the troopers of this historic regiment,” said Cantlon, “those who have fought and won with honor on our nation’s battlefields for 168 years. Brave Rifles!”
After the run, each of the squadrons competed against each other in bracket-style tournaments in sporting events including softball, football and basketball.
“It was a good experience interacting with people from other sections within my troop,” said Pfc. Jessica Latham, Regimental Headquarters and Headquarters Troop.”
“I’m happy to have met those guys. I was able to bring my loved ones and we spent the day hanging out with the families of my battle buddies. It was just fun; we had a real good time.”
The week of celebration wrapped up with a golf scramble at the Courses at Clear Creek and a birthday and cocktail party May 16.
