MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. – The 101 Days of Summer begins with the Stronger Warrior Field Meet aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., May 22.

The field meet was the first of several events being held for the three-month long summer program to emphasize participating Marines’ overall strengths.

“The Stronger Warrior Field Meet was in combination with the health fair using physical events and educational booths to show a Marine’s different strengths,” said Julie Barks, a Semper Fit dietitian. “The goal for this event and the others to come this year is to make Marines the strongest they can be all around, from physical strengths to mental and spiritual ones.”

Challenges from the field meet included a relay race, rock wall climbing, tug-of-war and an event called the “Dizzy Izzy”. The “Dizzy Izzy” involved putting on “beer goggles”, which simulate intoxication for those who wore them, and sprinting from one point to another.

“Today’s events involved friendly competition between different units from the station,” said Lance Cpl. Evan Edler, an airframes mechanic with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron (HMH) 465. “It was a fun and healthy way to bring Marines together before summer begins.”

Another large focus on the fair and field meet was to bring awareness to various health and fitness issues.

“This was a great way to raise awareness on subjects like our physical and mental health as Marines,” said Lance Cpl. Loryn Graham, a weather forecaster with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron. “Not only were the physical challenges a great test for our bodies, booths were set up with giveaways and information to help us with different topics like healthy eating and tobacco cessation.”

The 101 Days of Summer program is scheduled to hold an Obstacle Boot Camp Course as the next event, June 11. For more information, go to http://www.mccsmiramar.com/semper_fit.html.
