ARCADIA, Calif. – Units from the 311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command supported Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich at the 17th Annual Salute to Veterans and their families at Arcadia County Park in Arcadia, Calif. May 24.
Soldiers from the 419th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion and the 163rd Ordnance Company from Tustin, Calif., contributed to this salute by displaying an Oshkosh/Pierce Tactical Fire Fighting Truck and a Humvee.
“It is an honor to be part of this great event,” said Sgt. Miguel Ortiz-Ortiz, 419th CSSB motor pool noncommissioned officer-in-charge. “This is an opportunity for veterans and families to socialize and pay tribute to those who have served our nation.”
This Memorial Day event featured a large contingent of exhibitors who provide information, services and resources for veterans and their families. Military vehicles and equipment displays from many war eras were set up for visitors.
Fritz Coleman, KNBC-TV weatherman, served as the master of ceremonies. During the official ceremony, Supervisor Antonovich and city officials made speeches. A colored guard, manned by Korean and Vietnam War veterans, honored the American flag, a 20-gun salute was fired and taps was played.
Throughout the day, thousands of veterans and their families visited the military displays and booths that were displayed. Some highlights were vintage aircraft flyovers and skydivers.
Memorial Day is a U.S. federal holiday wherein the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces are remembered. This holiday, which is celebrated every year on the final Monday of May, was formerly known as Decoration Day and originated after the American Civil War.
