FORT HOOD, Texas – The 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion “Spartans,” 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, hosted a battalion safety stand down event at Fort Hood Stadium May 21.
The event was aimed at educating and creating awareness for Spartan Soldiers on critical safety issues on Fort Hood, said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Shannon Gordon, battalion maintenance officer and officer in charge of the event.
Gordon, a native of Heflin, Alabama, said the event encompassed six stations: privately-owned weapons safety, boating/fishing safety, fire safety, motorcycle safety, drinking and driving awareness, and heat casualty prevention.
Members of Fort Hood and the surrounding communities instructed the stations, Gordon said. This allowed experts to give quality information that wouldn’t be common knowledge.
“The civilian instructors are our partners, the subject matter experts, and we need that information if we expect the information to make an impact down to the lowest level,” Gordon said.
Reaching all levels worked as Spc. Robert Adams, a Cookeville, Tennessee, native and Spartan combat engineer, said courses were relevant to what goes on in a Soldier’s life and adaptable to any person regardless of rank.
Adams said he would like to take what he has learned, like different traffic laws, heat injury prevention and weapons laws, and introduce it to other Soldiers and friends. He said he hopes there is another stand down event in the near future.
