AUSTIN, Texas - Four retired guardsmen were inducted into the Texas Military Forces Hall of Honor in a ceremony that brought together past and present guardsmen to Camp Mabry in Austin, May 17, 2014.
Located inside the TXMF Museum, the Hall of Honor was created as a permanent tribute to recognize TXMF members who have made lasting contributions to the organization. Induction into the Hall of Honor is the highest form of recognition that may be bestowed upon a TXMF individual and is widely recognized as a crowning achievement of a distinguished career.
Maj. Gen. Robert L. Halverson and Command Sgt. Maj. Clyde Worrell of the Texas Army National Guard, as well as Maj. Gen. Charles Driggers and Chief Master Sgt. Harold Higgins of the Texas Air National, were the first inductees in four years.
The guardsmen “needed to be recognized for what they’ve done,” said Brig. Gen. Patrick Hamilton, Domestic Operations commander Texas Military Forces. With their years of command, said Hamilton, they’ve shaped the Texas Military Forces into what it is today.
Worrell and Higgins were recognized for their work in improving access to education and professional development within the noncommissioned officer corps, resulting in a more professional group of leaders.
Halverson and Driggers were recognized for integrating the Texas National Guard with active duty forces and improving Guard operations.
TXMF retirees, family members of the honorees and those currently serving filled the Camp Mabry auditorium to recognize the four men. Maj. Gen. Nichols, the adjutant general for Texas, thanked the four for paving the way for future generations of Texas guardsmen.
“Let us look back at what you all saw and keep the ball rolling,” said Nichols.
Pride in Texas and pride in the Texas Military Forces seemed to be high with each of the honorees.
“It’s a great day to be a lone star soldier,” said Halverson.
