DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. - When Airmen break regulations and find themselves in the Air Force legal crosshairs, times can be stressful and they may not know where to turn. During these taxing times, the Area Defense Counsel is here to help every Airman, at no cost to them.

The ADC office provides defense representation and legal advice for Airmen who are dealing with issues that range from Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) infractions and courts-martial to administrative issues, including letter of counseling (LOCs) and letter of reprimands (LORs).

Capt. Scott Welch, 436th Airlift Wing area defense counsel, said one of the best defenses for an Airman is being a good wingman and watching out for one another, but if you do encounter legal troubles the ADC is there for you.

"Essentially, we are the legal defense team for Airmen at Dover Air Force Base," said Welch. "If anything is affecting an Airman's career negatively, they can come to us for help and if we can't provide the services they need we make sure to send them to the right place."

The ADC is an experienced judge advocate assigned outside the local chain of command. This policy helps avoid an appearance of possible command influence or conflicts of interest and allows Airmen to receive completely confidential legal advice.

Tech. Sgt. Ebony Holder, 436th AW ADC paralegal, said the ADC is important to the Air Force because it provides an outlet for Airmen undergoing stressful times and to let them know someone is there to fight for them.

"We all fight for our rights and our country as Airmen," said Holder. "The ADC is important to the Air Force, because we are here to fight for our Airmen and their rights."

The ADC is not permitted to solicit to clients and Airmen have to seek out the ADC on their own. All information and counseling between Airmen the ADC is completely confidential.

"It is a privilege to serve in the United States Air Force and we should treat it as such," said Welch. "But, if that time comes in your career and you take that one step outside the bounds or you're getting close to it and you're not sure what's going on, we offer free service and we welcome any Airman to come in at any time."
