ARLINGTON, Va. – America paid its respects to former President John F. Kennedy, marking his birthday by laying a wreath at his grave site in Arlington National Cemetery, Va., May 29, 2014.

Kennedy was the youngest person to be elected President of the United States at 43 years and seven months, when he took office in 1961. Kennedy started his national political career, age 29, when he was elected to the House of Representatives from his home state of Massachusetts. He is also the only president, to date, to receive a purple heart.

Kennedy was assassinated, Nov. 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas, and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery three days later, Nov. 25. The list of world leaders that attended his funeral in ’63 included Charles de Gaulle President of France, Haile Selassie Emperor of Ethiopia and Prince Phillip of the United Kingdom. During his funeral there was a military flyover that included Air Force One, which tipped its wing in final tribute as it flew overhead.

The eternal flame, still burning today at his gravesite, was lit by his wife Jacqueline and his brother Robert.

Kennedy is one of only two former presidents buried at Arlington National Cemetery, the other being William Howard Taft.
