NEW ORLEANS - Col. James W. Harkin, chief of staff, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Forces Reserve is retiring after 28 years of service.
A native of Northern, Virginia, Harkin attended High School at W.T. Woodson in Fairfax, Virginia and graduated from George Mason University in 1986. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in May 1986. In July 2007, Colonel Harkin assumed the duties as the assistant chief of staff G-3 of Fourth Marine Aircraft Wing in New Orleans, Louisiana. In September 2011, he was reassigned to the Marine Forces Reserve headquarters staff in the G-3/5 as the Operations & Plans section head.
Harkin's education includes a master of arts in National Security Strategy from MCWAR, a master of arts in Military Studies (International Land Warfare) from American Military University, and has completed the Marine Corps Command and Staff Distance Education Program and the Amphibious Warfare School Distance Education Program.
Harkin has accumulated over 4,100 hours in the F/A-18, F-5, and various training command aircraft. His personal decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with gold star in lieu of second award, Individual Air Medal with combat V, Air Medal with Strike Flight numeral 4, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and numerous other unit and service awards.
Harkin’s father is a retired Navy Captain with 30 years of service and his father-in-law, who passed away a few years ago, served in the Air Force for four years.
