M.C. Perry students hosts Living Wax Museum

IWAKUNI, Japan - Sixth-graders of Matthew C. Perry Elementary School portrayed historical figures from Greek and Roman history during the Living Wax Museum at M.C. Perry Elementary School Gym aboard Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, June 3, 2014.

Students conducted research for approximately two months and showcased their hard work to the community during the event.

“Today, students presented their projects on ancient Rome and Greece,” said Amy Elder, M.C. Perry sixth-grade Languages Arts and Social Studies teacher. “They chose a god, goddess or warrior from history, researched that character, created an outline from the data and, finally, showcased their information using displays and costumes they designed.”

Elder said students gained valuable life skills they will be able to use after the project.

“They’re always going to have to research something and present that information to someone,” said Elder. “Why not start in sixth grade, where they can build a solid foundation that they’ll be able to use even after college?” said Elder.

William Guthrie, an M.C. Perry sixth-grader who portrayed Spartacus, said there was an abundance of knowledge flowing through the room with the history of Greece and Rome being presented.

“I liked everyone coming in and admiring our costumes,” said Guthrie. “Before classes would come in, we’d stand completely still to look like statues. They would come closer and we would move and it surprised them, so that was awesome. Afterward, we showed them how much knowledge we learned about our character.”

Guthrie said he chose Spartacus because he admired Spartacus’ courage and how he stood behind everything he believed in.
According to Elder, the event gave people a lot of information pertaining to Greek and Roman history, such as their beliefs, philosophies and leadership.
