RALEIGH, N.C. – Fifteen Soldiers with the North Carolina National Guard’s 621st Survey and Design Team, 505th Engineer Battalion, 130th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, were honored during a farewell ceremony held at the National Guard Armory in Charlotte, North Carolina, May 30, 2014.

The team of engineers are scheduled to deploy in support of Operation Spartan Shield, a mission designed to foster partnerships with Kuwaiti Land Forces to work towards collaborative training and sharing opportunities. The unit will be responsible for providing construction geodetic surveys, prepare detailed construction plan drawings, and execute quality assurance and quality control.

Of the 15 Soldiers deploying with the 621st, three of them have already deployed twice and two have already deployed three times in support of the Global War on Terror. Several of the Soldiers also volunteered to deploy with this unit.

The 621st, based out of Gastonia, North Carolina, has also deployed before; as part of the 505th Engineer Battalion in 2005 and as a separate unit in 2009.

The Soldiers in the unit are eager to perform their mission and represent their state.

“I can’t wait to go,” said Sgt. Derek Adams, a Gastonia native who is one of the 15 deploying with the 621st. “I’m pretty excited. This deployment is an opportunity to go and leave a positive mark on the world and represent the North Carolina National Guard. It gives us a chance to show the other branches and services that the Guard is just as proficient as them.”

Command Sgt. Maj. Paul Terry, the senior enlisted leader for the 130th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, said he looks forward to the great things the Survey and Design team will do.

“These Soldiers are awesome,” Terry said. “Over half of the unit has deployed before and most of them volunteered to go on this mission. It speaks volumes of the caliber of the Soldiers in their career field.”
