TAPA, Estonia – U.S. Army paratroopers from Company C, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade, built a small mock village to use for an upcoming training exercise near Tapa, Estonia, on June 8.
The training exercise, which will take place on June 9, includes live fire and demolition training.
“Building our own objectives allows us to tailor the training to our needs in order to certify our squads,” U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Cory Plunk, a platoon sergeant with Company C, said. “We have a great opportunity to tailor [the training to] exactly what we need at the company level, which is not something we get to do very often, so it’s been pretty cool.”
According to Plunk, when a company level asset receives the opportunity to plan and conduct their own training, it also allows them to better focus on important aspects of their job and develop skills that are not used daily.
“The exercise will be a platoon live fire, where [Soldiers] will come over the hill and set up a support by fire and then hit three objectives and a total of 28 targets,” Plunk said. “The main objective is to get everyone some good training out here.”
Approximately 600 paratroopers from the brigade are in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, as part of an unscheduled land-forces exercise to demonstrate commitment to NATO obligations and sustain interoperability with allied forces.
