EL MONTE, Calif. – Lt. Col. Cory F. Henry assumed command of the 155th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion from Lt. Col. (P) Derric H. Anderson, who had led the battalion for two and half years, in a change of command ceremony at the U.S. Army Reserve Center in El Monte, Calif. June 8.
Henry began his military career in 1996 when he was commissioned as a second lieutenant after graduating from Purdue University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology. He has served as a Squadron Chemical Officer and deployed to Iraq for 15 months.
The ceremony began with the traditional ceremonial pageantry. The standing unit was summoned to order arms. The audience stood for the Presentation of the Colors and Honors, and the unit was brought to present arms, then to parade rest. Then, the official party made an inspection of the troops. These displays of uniformity were executed with discipline and precision.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the Soldiers of this battalion who have helped me accomplish all the good things we have done,” said Anderson, the outgoing commander. “I want to thank the junior leadership where the rubber hits the road. I will never forget you.”
The core of the ceremony was the formal transfer of authority and responsibility. The command sergeant major of the 155th CSSB, who is the keeper of the colors, passed the colors to the outgoing commander. He then passed the colors to the 304th Sustainment Brigade commander, Col. Robin H Jones, symbolizing the relinquishment of his command. The commander then delivered the colors to the incoming commander.
Finally, the new commander passed the colors back to the command sergeant major, who is charged with protecting it. At the end of the ceremony, the 304th SBDE commander ordered the new battalion commander to take charge of his battalion.
“I am excited and humbled by taking command of this battalion. I am going to continue the good work done by Colonel Anderson,” said Henry. “I am ready to achieve the goal of ensuring that this unit is ready for today’s fight and the fight that is ahead.”
Distinguished guests included Brig. Gen. Scottie Carpenter, 311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command commanding general, and Col. Robin H Jones, 304th SBDE commander, who transferred the unit colors to the incoming brigade commander.
The 155th Combat Service Support Battalion provides transport, supply, catering and maintenance support services, supporting several organizations as well as multifunctional logistics assistance to other support organizations.
